THE TURNTABLES WENT QUIET THE SIGNAL DID NOT
I’m Derek Peterson—the musician, builder, and human behind TEKNOLUST, an independent Creative Teknology Studio in Portland. Music and technology ran alongside each other for decades. This is where they became one practice.
My creative path began in 1999 with a pair of Technics and a mixer. DJing meant finding records, reading rooms, and building long arcs from other people’s music. I learned how a sequence of sounds could become somewhere else entirely.
In 2016, I began making the music instead of only mixing it. Synthesis, sound design, arrangement, and production opened another way to tell a story. The glow of arcade screens, the pulse of underground raves, and the synthesizers of the ’80s and ’90s still find their way into the work.
After 27 years in technology, a career disruption in 2026 created the opening to bring those paths together full-time. TEKNOLUST became a company that July; the creative life behind it had been taking shape much longer.
Today I make cinematic electronic journeys, build software and creative tools, and explore visual worlds and physical objects. The forms vary, but the impulse stays familiar: make something another person can feel, discover, or use to imagine what comes next.
MADE BY A HUMAN WITH MACHINES
The studio is a connected landscape of instruments, computers, code, and cloud tools. Some shape sound; others help an idea become an image, an object, or an experience. Building the connections is part of the practice, alongside making the work itself.
Hardware, software, and AI are instruments for exploration. Direction, judgment, meaning, and responsibility remain mine. I choose what belongs, what survives, and what is released.
